MDA Summer Camp

By Jamie Vicknair, RN, BSN, CPN posted 04-23-2019 09:16

The week of June 15-21 we host MDA Summer Camp at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA for about 100 children living with muscle disease. We have over 150 volunteers that come in on the 15th and get a full day of training before campers come on Sunday, June 16th.

We are looking for a few volunteers to help us out either that weekend of that week and I thought school nurses would be great! You guys are working with these kiddos in school a lot of times and already know their needs!

There are three options for volunteer medical staff:

  1. 2-3 hours on Saturday, June 15th to check in Counselors (med check in, vitals, etc)
  2. full-week- June 15-21
  3. or weekend only- June 15-16 (Counselor check in and Camper check in)

We have an experienced medical staff who will be there all week and will make sure everyone feels totally at ease while at camp. Our medical team includes a neurologist, a dermatologist, an RT, a PT, a pharmacist, and several nurses.

The full-week medical staff arrive on Saturday June 15 and stay through Friday June 21. They sleep onsite and assist with day-to-day activities, which include: organizing and distributing medication at meal times; assessing and caring for sick or injured participants; assisting with more complicated needs, such as flushing a G-Tube; and attending all activities and meals to ensure safety of participants. It’s not all serious business – they get to participate in the fun, like roasting s’more’s, dance parties, or cheering on “the Saints” at our wheelchair football game J

To volunteer for the full week as med staff, please follow this link and fill out your application: www.tinyurl.com/apply4camp
All camp paperwork is due April 15, 2019.

The weekend medical staff arrive Saturday June 15, spend one night, and depart in the late afternoon Sunday June 16. They assist the weeklong medical team intaking counselors on 6/15 and campers on 6/16. All participants must be examined and pronounced healthy, well-appearing, and critter-free, and without extra medical personnel it takes a long time to intake a participant. You get to know the campers well during intake. They are all in great moods and will keep you laughing.

To apply to be two-day med staff, please fill out the attached form and return it to me by April 15, 2019.

MDA organizes meals, medical supplies, radios, golf carts, and anything else you will need during your stay. Please let me know if I can answer any questions!

I have attached the weekend application and a med staff flyer.
